Emotions ran high as the remains of four students of Federal Government Girls College, FGGC Oyo, who died in a motor accident were buried.
The student’s untimely demise occurred on Sunday on their way to school from mid-term break at Sabo Market, Oyo. The affected students were John Olubukola, SSS3, Giwa Taibat SSS3, Ladipo Mojisola SSS 1 and Ibirogba Maryam JSS 3.
The students, from various destinations, some coming from Oyo, while others were on their way from Lagos had arrived in Oyo, boarded a bus at Owode motor park en route the school when a garri-laden articulated truck fell on their bus at Sabo Market.
The four students and the driver of the commercial bus which was conveying the students died on the spot, while five other girls were left with severe injuries. The casualties are receiving treatment at Peamark Hospital, Oyo.
It has been an atmosphere of mourning for the students and teachers who broke down in tears when the names of the affected students were mentioned on the assembly ground.
The deceased students were said to have been buried yesterday at a nearby town, Aawe, at the public Muslim cemetery and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) cemetery in Oyo, on Monday.
But for security reasons, the incident which generated tension had earlier prompted the students and some sympathizers to stage peaceful protest. The State Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent Adekunle Ajisebutu, has also confirmed the unfortunate incident.
Management and students of FGGC Oyo have now called on the concerned authorities to relocate the market and fix the bad road, both of which, they say, have caused so many accidents and loss of lives in order to avert such mishaps in future.
