The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi who visited Ukpabi-Nimbo, in Uzo-Uwani local government area of the state on Tuesday morning, could not hold back his tears as he tried comfort the villagers who had lost their loves ones in the attack launched against the community by the Fulani herdsmen in the early hours of Monday morning.
Daily Post reports that the Governor who had cut off all his other official engagements for an on-the-spot assessment of the troubled Ukpabi-Nimbo community, was in the company of Enugu state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nwodibo Ekechukwu, the GOC 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, as well as the Enugu State Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The Governor, thereafter, declared a two day fasting and prayer in the State, urging residents of Ukpabi-Nimbo to hand over the situation into the hand of God.
There were many survivors, with different degrees of injuries on the head, neck, and other parts of the body who are said to be presently receiving treatment in various hospitals in Nsukka. As at the time of filling this report, some of them are being moved to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu.
Governor Ugwuanyi is also expected to visit the Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka where the slain bodies of the villagers were kept as well as wounded people who are currently receiving treatment amidst tight security.
The visit coincided with the recovery of one more dead resident, who was slaughtered by the Fulani herdsmen as confirmed by the State Police Public Relations Officer, Ebere Amarizu, bringing the total casualties to six.
The Police Spokesman also said that normalcy has been restored to the area as security has equally been tightened in the area and its environs by the commissioner of police in order to avoid further breakdown of law and other as well as further attack in the area.
“The Enugu State command of the Nigeria Police Force have commenced a full scale investigations into the alleged killing of six persons on 25/4/16 at Nimbo in Uzo uwani Local Government Area of Enugu state by men suspected to be herdsmen.
“Following the report of the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, had mobilised and left with operatives to ensure that the incident did not degenerate into uncontrollable situation and to work out modalities/strategies aimed at fishing out those behind the unfortunate incident and bring them to book.”
