Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi ll has waged war against Muslims clerics, Islamic title holders, District heads, village and ward heads in the state who are in the habit of beating up their wives.
Sanusi warned all those aforementioned and those in the habit of marrying off their daughters against their wish to desist from such act, as anyone found wanting would “outrightly lose his title.”
The Emir also said he won’t be backing down on laws seeking to stop poor men from marrying more than a wife despite criticism.
Emir Sanusi made this known on Sunday, February 26 during a mass wedding of 1,520 couples sponsored by the Kano state government. Hear him;
“You should all come back to your senses and stop these barbaric [acts] because we will not allow these to continue in Kano.
“I have warned all district heads, village heads, ward heads and imams to also desist from the bad habit of beating their wives and whoever among them is reported to me to have beaten up his wife, would outrightly lose his title.”
On the proposed Kano family law, the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN explained that although the law was not meant to stop Muslims from marrying up to four wives, it regulates how a man should treat his wives and children according to the tenets of Islam.
He said they were going meet this week to review the over 80 pages of the law and make the necessary adjustment before presenting it to the State House of Assembly for passage into law. He explained;
“Our people are facing serious challenges in their family affairs. We have heard series of complaints where a father forced his daughter to marry someone against her wish. We have heard so many cases where people marry additional wives while they could not feed them well, clothe them well or give them good shelter even though they have the means to do so.
“In this case, the proposed law provides that, a court of law would take something out of the man’s wealth to feed his family, give them shelter and clothes. In the event the man makes any attempt to resist the court’s directives, then the law takes necessary action against him. If you know, your salary cannot take care of more than one wife, you should not get an additional wife.”
According to the Emir, those kicking against his family law are those seeking to keep marrying wives without the ability to take good care of them.
Meanwhile, the Emir, who is also the national president general, Jama’at Faedat Tijjaninniya of Nigeria, has urged Muslims to unite and eschew hatred.
Speaking on Sunday in Ilorin at the inauguration of the Kwara State chapter of Ansarrudeen Attijanniyya society, Emir Sanusi, where he was represented by the National Secretary-General of the society, Sayyidi Yahaya, said Islam was not by show-off, but by adherents having a clear understanding and practicing its tenets.
He said; “Do not hate, Islam is not by hating others. Our mission is to propagate peace, unity, and togetherness.
The objective of the society is to become the most peaceful group in Nigeria and bring out the best of humanity in people.“
