History of Abia State University

Before we delve into the main topic, let’s take a look at a brief history of the prestigious university. Abia State University, abbreviated as ABSU, was founded by the former governor of Imo state, Sam Mbakwe, in 1981. The institution was at the time located at Etiti, Imo State, and was known as Imo State University, Etiti.

Between 1984 and 1985, during the military reign of General Ike Nwachukwu, the university moved to its permanent (current) site at Uturu, Okigwe, Imo State. However, following the creation of Abia State in 1991, the university was ceded to the newly created state and became known as Abia State University Uturu.

ABSU is situated at Longitude 5o42’N and Latitude 6o48’E on an average elevation of 450m and is located in Uturu in Isuikwuato Local Government Area, Abia State, Nigeria. The university is accessible to three international airports; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu with a driving time of about two hours, Dr. Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri with about two hours driving time, and The Port Harcourt International Airport with about two and a half hours driving time.

ABSU School Fees Structure

Even though ABSU academic fees are not individually broken down, students are assured of affordability. According to the university management, the school is financially accessible to accepted students and they are willing to work with parents to make the fees graceful on their shoulders.

Generally, ABSU school fees range from N56,000 to N120,000. However, the school fees are dependent on the program or course you are taking. Courses like Engineering, Law, Medicine could cost about but the amount reduces every session.

Requirements to Study Law in ABSU Via Jamb

  • Candidates must have at least 5 credit passes in their O’level result (WAEC/ NECO or GCE) including English Language and Mathematics at not more than 2 sittings
  • Meet the cut-off mark for Law which is 280 and above in Jamb
  • Must choose the correct Jamb subject combination
  • Have a good score in POSTUTME
  • Candidate must not be lesser than 16 years of age at the time of admission

Through Direct Entry

  • Candidate must possess a minimum of 5 credit passes in the SSCE, GCE in not more than 2 sittings.
  • A First Class or Second Class Upper degree in related fields.
  • DE candidates are required to purchase the ABSU Direct Entry form through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) And ABSU Portal.
  • Candidates must have acquired a minimum of Merit Pass in the National Certificate of Education (NCE), or National Diploma (ND) Certificates.
