Chuks Okebata: Police Arrest Suspected Killers Of Nigerian-Born US Army Veteran

Seven weeks after the Nigerian-born US Army veteran Chuks Okebata was kidnapped and killed in Owerri, Imo state, the Nigeria Police has finally arrested the suspected culprits.

The Imo State Police Command arrested the suspects after they sold their victim’s Samsung Note 5 handset to a third party at N125,000. It was through this third party that the police was able to trace the suspected killers.

The soldier’s demise was a shocker to Nigerians especially to the people of Imo state and his family members particularly.

Speaking on Chuks Okebata’s death, a source who claimed to be cousins with the deceased said:

“My Cousin, Chuks Okebata, a USA Veteran, who has spent most part of his life working and defending the United States of America. After a very long time living in the USA, and because of the love he has for his country Nigeria and his home town (Umuduruorie Umuomumu Mbieri in Mbaitoli LGA), he started building a house at home as a bond that make him to be frequenting his mother land.

“Just as he returned last Xmas to spend his vacation in Nigeria and also to move into his new home. At Exactly 5pm on the 12th of Jan 2017, some gun men abducted and shot him.”

He went on to say;

“For all I know about my cousin, he has always been a free, gentle, and relates to everyone irrespective of your age. He’s survived by his two lovely sons and a wife (he has been in a serious battle with his wife in the US). A bounty has been placed on anybody with any clue whatsoever that can lead to the arrest of the hoodlums. A sum of N2.5 million reward as the family is out to seek justice for their assassinated son.”

Okebata’s death kept the social media abuzz in January after his family accused his wife of being the brain behind his death. To back up their claim, Ada Mbaeri, sister to Chuks Okebata, in a Facebook post shared disturbing videos of the army veteran’s verbal fight with his wife which shows how she threw him out of their home in US sequel to a domestic altercation.

Although many people believed she was involved in the death of her husband, the young mother denied the accusations and explained why she threw him out their home: he rubbed his infidelities in her face and even shared all the messy details of his affairs on his Facebook to shame her.

The matter had been quiet since January until the Imo police busted the gang of four who are allegedly responsible for the murder of the army veteran.

Speaking with the press yesterday, March 1, the state Commissioner of Police, Taiwo Lakanu, identified the men who according to him, were arrested after concrete evidence was established about their involvement in the death of Okebata. The men are – Osondu Chukwu, Uchechukwu Stanley, Onyekachi Kelvin Nwoke and Uchendu Promise.

“The suspects were arrested in connection with the robbery and murder of one Oscar Okebata, of Achi Mbieri in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State, an American veteran soldier who returned home for the yuletide period last year.

“The victim’s Samsung Note 5 handset was sold at N125,000, leading to the arrest of the suspected masterminds of the crime,” Lakanu disclosed.
