BBC Names Chandigarh ‘Most Perfect City In The World’. See Why


The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) had in December named the city of Chandigarh the most prosperous, perfect and the greenest city the world ever had.

In an article title ‘Is this the perfect city?’, the writer explains why this famous city, situated in India should be considered the best. Chandigarh is a city and a union territory in the northern part of India that serves as the capital of the states of Punjab and Haryana

The city of Chandigarh was the first planned city in India post-independence in 1947 and is known internationally for its architecture and urban design. The master plan of the city was prepared by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, transformed from earlier plans created by the Polish architect Maciej Nowicki and the American planner Albert Mayer.

The BBC writer stated further that;

“Not only would this be the capital of Indian Punjab, but it would be the very model of a modern city promising peace, democracy and a new social order free of bitter divisions. It’s also interesting to know that the city derived its name from a temple “chandi mandir”.

Architect Le Corbusier conceptualized Chandigarh as analogous to the human body. The ‘Head’ being Capitol Complex in Sector 1, ‘the Heart being City Centre Sector-17, ‘the Lungs’ being the open space and greenery, ‘the Circulatory System’ being the 7V’s and ‘the Brain’ being the Educational Institutions. This city comprises of Sukhna Lake

No one travels to India and  does not visit this human wonder. A 3 km² rainfed lake that was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Originally, the seasonal flow entered the lake directly causing heavy siltation. The lake is in fact an example of natural beauty constructed by man.

Chandigarh is both the cleanest and the happiest city in India, according to two different surveys conducted in 2010 and 2015 respectively.
