Nigeria’s former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has likened political leadership to business, adding that consequently, the decision to choose whom to “buy” from in 2019 was entirely that of the “customer”.
Recall that Mr. Abubakar made a declaration on Sunday through his Facebook page, that he was going back to his former party, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, after his resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, last month due to failed promises by the APC.
“The party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth?” the former vice president said in his resignation letter.
Since his declaration, Atiku Abubakar has been using the social media to engage Nigerians over his ambition to run for president in 2019.
On Monday, December 4, a Twitter user, by name Tayo Oviosu (@oviosu), tweeted at the former vice president saying:
“Don’t you think Nigeria needs fresh young leaders vs leaders who have been there before? You have been VP and served well. Can we not make room for new up and coming leaders?”
Mr. Oviosu asked the former leader to be candid in his response if he wanted his vote.
Responding, Mr. Atiku Abubakar (@atiku) said:
“Tayo, leadership is like business. I say my product is the best because I believe it is. You say your product is the best because you believe it is.
“We leave the customer to make the buying decision”.
Few hours after Atiku Abubakar declared that he was re-joining his former party, a Nigerian senator, Ben Murray-Bruce, described him as “the next president of Nigeria”.
Mr. Murray-Bruce, Senator representing Bayelsa East under the umbrella of PDP, in his tweet said it was time Buhari was removed, adding that PDP had a good retirement plan for him come 2019.
“We in the PDP already have a good retirement package for President @MBuhari.
“Time to #ChangeTheChange.”
In the same vein, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Friday reacted to the return of the former Vice President to the party.
PDP in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Dayo Adeyeye welcomed Atiku, while beckoning on others in APC to return.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of Northern Elders Forum, NEF, Chief Paul Unongo, has stated that Atiku Abubakar jumps from one party to the other because he has nothing to offer Nigeria as a president.
Unongo speaking with The Sun stated that Atiku cannot be compared to President Muhammadu Buhari stressing that President of Nigeria come 2019 must not be an arrogant, rich and overconfident lazy candidate who feels he can jump from one party to the other to buy the conscience of the people
According to him, Northerners were not going to bring PDP back into power and Buhari would still win election come 2019 no matter what PDP did.
