6 Reasons You Wake Up Tired Even After A Long Night Sleep


Imagine one week of your life without a minute of sleep! That’s disaster in it’s worse form waiting to happen. The best way to start a new day is to wake up refreshed. However, there may be times when you wake up tired as though you went farming in your dream. On such days, you feel too lazy to get out of bed irrespective of the sufficient hours you had spent sleeping. Almost everyone do experience this feeling once in a while, and trust me, there is nothing wrong with you, there are reasons for such occurrences.

Sleep is one of the most precious gifts of life which is needed to reboot the body system everyday and prepare it for another round of activities. It is a natural recurring state of mind characterized by altered consciousness, relatively inhibited sensory activity, inhibition of nearly all voluntary muscles, and reduced interactions with surroundings. Sleep is simply when you close your eyes and doze off. This article explains why you wake up tired some days even after a long night rest.


1. Poor Quality of Sleep

Sleeping in an environment that is not conducive can translate into poor sleep no matter how long you sleep. After having such low quality of sleep, for instance sleeping on a couch, floor or uncomfortable bed, you find yourself even more tired when you wake up than you went to sleep. Too much noise in the background, excess heat or cold are also factors that interrupt sleep, thereby reducing its quality and effectiveness.

2. Regular Use of the Bathroom During Sleep time

Waking up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom is called Nocturia. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 65 percent of older adults are sleep deprived as a result of frequent night time urination. Normally, our bodies have a natural process that concentrates urine while we sleep so we can get six to eight hours without waking up. Older people experience the opposite once their body gets weaker, they find it difficult to hold ‘pee’ till morning, thereby interrupting their sleep and waking up tired.

3. Medication Hangover

Sick people have this ‘wake-up-tired’ feeling more often than healthy people, and this is due to the effect of some of their medication. Some drugs give drowsy effect which can linger for a long time without wearing off. Drinking caffeinated beverages late in the day, or over-exhaustiveness in the previous day can also lead to a fatigue feeling in the morning.

4. Waking up in the Wrong Phase

Human sleep occurs in periods of approximately 90 minutes, and the sleep proceeds in cycles of REM and Non-REM, usually four or five of them per night. The REM phase is the initial and last stage of sleep where the body system begins to shut down gradually, and prepares to wake up, respectively.


The non-REM is a state of very deep sleep. It is divided into three stages; N1 (occurs between sleep and wakefulness), N2 (muscular activities and conscious awareness of the external environment disappears), and N3 (at this point you are dead to the environment). If you wake up during the non-REM stage you are bound to feel tired and unsatisfied, but waking up in a REM phase tends to be more relaxing as the body  is already preparing to wake up. However, a complete sleep section occurs in this order: N1 → N2 → N3 → N2 → REM.

5. Medical Condition

Certain medical conditions like sleep apnea can disrupt your night’s rest. Disorders like depression can also cause you to feel drained of energy, a symptom that can contribute to your sleepiness. On the other hand, people with Insomnia are less likely to feel tired when they wake up no matter how short the sleep, because their body appreciates and utilizes every single sleep it experiences due to long time of deprivation.

6. Your Body Clock is not in Sync

The body is very disciplined, once it’s normal wake up time is disrupted, it finds it hard to immediately adapt to the new schedule. Let your body clock synchronize with your alarm clock, that way you won’t feel stressed out after spending the whole night in dream land. Also, plan your sleeping and wake -up time to be constant everyday so your body gets used to it, but it will sure frown when that schedule changes.
