It is finally here! After months of waiting and anticipating, the 2017/2018 football season is almost upon us and we at BuzzNigeria have our 2017 English Premier League Preview.
The focus is on the teams that finished top six in the English Premier League last season. We also make some predictions at the end.
They were by far the best team in the England, they swept aside the competition but it is already obvious that this season will be entirely different. The question remains, how will the champions cope? For starters, Diego Costa, the Spanish striker that produced the goals that helped them to the title last season is no longer a part of the current Blues setup.
For starters, Diego Costa, the Spanish striker that produced the goals that helped them to the title last season is no longer a part of the current Blues setup.
The added rigours of Champions League football and the additional pressure of being the Champions cannot be understated. It has been a difficult summer at the bridge. They have begun the season with a relatively small squad while their top rivals (except Tottenham Hotspurs) have all added summer signings in key areas. and with added fixtures and injuries will be impossible for Conte to stick to a small retinue of players.
Added with the extra fixtures and injuries, it will be impossible for Conte and the Blue army to stick the title for the second season running.
The perfectionist in Antonio Conte will want to see Chelsea play with intensity in every single game, but the board haven’t done enough in the market to back him up and if the squad remains the same it will be as difficult as the Italian already said it will prove.
EPL Predicted Position: 2nd
For the past 2 seasons, it has been tip-top Tottenham and the boys down the lane have grown in stature, evident in Spurs finishing above Arsenal last season.
But all is not well down at Ben Nicolson Way North London, they remain the only team not to have recruited this summer so far and with the added financial constraint of building a stadium they do not have the financial muscle available to other top teams.
All this could be overlooked if the still played at the Lane but they will play home games at Wembley which has proved not to be a happy hunting ground for them in recent seasons. If they end up without reinforcement, things won’t be all rosy. If we are to pick a team to fall away, it will have to be them.
EPL Predicted Position: 6th
Guardiola has no excuse this season, seeing that the club owner, Shiekh Mansoor has backed the former Barca legend with the millions of pounds. So far, with £230 million spent, Pep has to deliver big.
But as exciting as City will be to watch this season, there are doubts if they possess the resilience and steel of Champions.
It is easy to see them winning lots of games 5-0 but not enough fight for 1-0 victories which was evident in Chelsea last season, but write them off at your own peril.
EPL Predicted Position: 3rd

For all of Klopp’s impressive array of talents as a manager and the vigour and verve which Liverpool play the big teams, it is difficult to see them mounting a serious title challenge.
First, they do not have the financial backing their rivals have and secondly and most importantly they always seem to turn up for the big games and get beaten by a Crystal Palace a week later.
And if they do lose star man Coutinho, it could only get worse for them. Inconsistency is a huge factor in our assessment of their chances for the new season.
EPL Predicted Position: 5th
The Gunners for the first time under Wenger finished outside the top 4 and optimistic Arsenal fans feel that could be a blessing in disguise and their best opportunity to win the league.
Arsenal still does not have the look of potential Champions. Nearly half a dozen players are out of contract in 12 months, including star duo Sanchez and Ozil. The team is yet to find a midfield replacement for ageing Santi Cazorla.
With the uncertainty over key personnel, the Gunners can expect another mediocre season. And except something big happens – both players renew their contracts and Wenger bolsters his central midfield options, things don’t look too bright.
EPL Predicted Position: 4th
The Special One has a system which always seems to work. He usually spends his first season building his team in his own image, and most (actually in all his) second seasons, he takes no prisoners in winning the title.
This is his 2nd season and for all his antics and misdemeanours he is a serial winner and you either love or hate the way his teams play.
He has slowly but steadily built this United team into his own Image with his recruitment this season. This looks to be the season for the real battle between the two Mancunian clubs. But Mourinho has been there and done it in this league.
EPL Predicted Position: 1st
