10 Evergreen Nigerian Legislators Who Have Held Positions in Every Government


Some Nigerian politicians are like the proverbial “cat with nine lives”. They scale all the political hurdles that comes their way, and remain relevant in the scheme of things in successive administrations.

While, some of them are referred to as ‘AGIP’ which means “Any Government In Power”, others are simply called “Professional Politicians”.

Here is a list comprising 10 politicians that have dominated the political space since the return of democracy in 1999.  All but one of the politicians listed belong to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while the only opposition politician (All Progressives Congress, APC) on the list used to be a member of the PDP before his defection to the APC late last year.

1. Senate President David Mark

David Alechenu Bonaventure Mark is the President of the Senate of Nigeria and Senator for the Benue State constituency (Benue South Senatorial District). He’s been in the politics of Nigeria since the military administrations and transited to the democratic rule. He is has been in the senate since 1999 to date and is going for the 5th term. He is a member of the People’s Democratic Party.

2. Senator Ita Enang


Ita Solomon Enang is a Nigerian politician who represented the Itu and Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State in the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2011. He is of the PDP. He was also a member of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 1992,  and is presently a serving Senator (2011 till date)

3. Governor Gabriel Suswam

Gabriel Torwua Suswam is a Nigerian politician who became governor of Benue State in May 2007 after being a member of the House of Representatives 1999-2007. He ran for governorship again  in the 26 April 2011 elections on the PDP platform and was successful. He is currently a governor in his last tenure and also the PDP candidate Benue North West Senatorial District in the 2015 elections.

4. Honourable Farouk Lawan

Farouk Muhammad Lawan is a Nigerian politician and four-term member of the House of Representatives for the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency of Kano State. He is currently running for yet another term in 2015 under the platform of the PDP.

5. Honourable Bashir Adamu

Nicholas Ebomo Mutu (PDP Delta State) –  12 Years as Honourable Member, National Assembly of Nigeria (House of Representatives) 1999-2015, now PDP candidate 2015 election.

8. Honourable John Enoh

John Enoh (PDP Cross River State) – Member Cross River State House of Assembly 1999 -2003, House of Representatives member 2003 -2015, Chairman Appropriations committee, now PDP candidate Cross River Central Senatorial District 2015 election.

9. Honourable Emeka Ihedioha


Chukwuemeka Ihedioha contested and won a seat into the House of Representative as a member representing Aboh-MbasieNgor Okpala Federal Constituency of Imo State in 2003 on the platform of the PDP. He has remained there ever since He became Deputy Speaker of the House in 2007 and now PDP Governorship candidate Imo State 2015 elections.

10. Honourable Aminu Waziri Tambuwal


Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria. He is an All Progressives Congress (APC) member and represents the Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State. He has been a member of the House of Representatives since 2003 and became the Speaker in 2007. He is now APC Governorship candidate in Sokoto State 2015 election.

Meanwhile, it is important to point out that this list focuses on politicians from the legislative arm of government which allows for unlimited number of terms in office.
