Manchester United’s big-name summer signing, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, has responded to Eric Cantona’s claim that he can be the ‘prince’ of his new club with a golden quote of his own, insisting he will be a “god” at Manchester United.
Cantona had in one of his Euro 2016 video messages for Eurosport, welcomed Zlatan to Old Trafford, saying his summer switch was the best choice he will have ever made but added that he (Zlatan) can only be a ‘prince’ as there can only be one king in Manchester.
“I have a personal message for Zlatan: you decided to go Red. It is the best choice you ever made. Just one last thing, there can only be one king in Manchester. You can be the prince if you want to.
“The No.7 is yours if you are interested. That is my welcome gift to you … the king is gone! Long live the prince!”
However, the 34-year-old who would not settle for a lower rank to Cantona, responded by saying;
“I heard what [Cantona] said and I congratulate him because I have always admired him. But he should know that I will not be king of Manchester, I will be a god in Manchester.”
And he sure will get an early chance to stake his claim this week when he is expected to return to training ahead of of the new season.
His arrival has been greeted with elation among Man United’s supporters and Jose Mourinho believes he can link up well with Marcus Rashford this season and beyond.
Mourinho had said:
“He wins year after year. His goal record is absolutely amazing, his passion for the game is incredible, and it’s only possible with his passion and ambition, with his CV, to make the decision at this stage of his career, for the biggest challenge of his career.”
Ibrahimovic has evolved as a footballer since the 2008-09 campaign he spent with Mourinho , ending it as a Serie A champion and the division’s leading scorer.
