Uyo Church Collapse: NEMA Reports Six Persons Dead, Many Injured
Following the roof collapse incident at the Reigners Bible Church building in Uyo on Saturday, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reported six persons dead.
An updated statement released by NEMA’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Sani Datti on Sunday in Abuja confirmed abut 115 persons injured.
The statement said after conducting a 360 degree search at the site of the collapse, both in and outside the church, 115 persons were injured.
The agency further disclosed that no one is currently left under the rubble as those injured had since been evacuated.
On Saturday December 10, the Reigners Bible Church auditorium roof caved in during the consecration of its pastor as a bishop.
Many dignitaries including the Akwa Ibom state governor, Udom Emmanuel was said to have escaped death by hairs breath.
Governor Udom Emmanuel had arrived at the venue of the church programme late, escaping the collapse.
The governor was on schedule to attend the ordination service of the pastor of The Reigners Bible Church in Uyo.
Uyo Church Collapse: AKS Govt To Bear Medical Bills Of Injured
According to eye witness account, The Reigners Bible Church, located along Uyo Village Road, was filled to capacity on the day.
The witness also disclosed that the Church was being renovated and upgraded because of the expected high number of guests on Saturday.
The witness said:
“Many people are buried under the debris as emergency workers continue rescue exercise.
“The governor has gone to the scene and is presently there helping with the rescue”
Meanwhile, the Akwa Ibom State Governor has stated that the State Government would bear the cost of all those injured in the collapse.
Governor Udom has ordered for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the contractor handling the project.
The Akwa Ibom State government has also declared two days of mourning in honour of victims of the collapsed Reigners Bible Church building in Uyo.
