The Senate has called for the resignation, probe and prosecution of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF Babachir Lawal, over alleged IDPs contract scam.
SGF Babachir Lawal, who allegedly owns one of the companies awarded contracts in the rehabilitation of the North-East, was found to have been involved in allocating contracts to himself in the tune of N108 million without executing them.
This was uncovered on Wednesday athe the Senate floor, in an interim report submitted by Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Mounting Humanitarian crises in the North-East.
The committee said they investigated massive fraud involving the supply of relief materials, but regretted that the SGF awarded the contract to himself.
Babachir Lawal through his company, ‘Rholavision Engineering Limited’ which was a communication and technology firm, was executing a project for supplies of Tarpaulin to IDPs which he never completed and still went ahead to pay himself, but the items have not been fully delivered.
The report showed that the company which was incorporated in 1990 with the Corporate Affairs Commission with objectives on Information and Communications had Babachir Lawal as the Director.
Lawal was alleged to have resigned his directorship of the company in September, 2016, after becoming the SGF and the Senate began the investigation of financial malfeasance following public complaints.
Consequently, this revelation sparked outrage among the Senators who criticized Lawal for allegedly working against the anti-corruption stance of the current administration.
Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West Senatorial district called for the SGF to resign his appointment, noting that he has become a disgrace to APC-led government. He added that Babachir should make himself available for prosecution.
In Senator Melaye’s words; “Mr. Senate President, Distinguished Colleagues, I am calling for the resignation of the SGF with immediate effect because he has become a disgrace”.
