The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the elections in Rivers State will now be held on Saturday, April 18 for areas of the state which elections did not hold last Saturday, April 11.
This was made known by the resident electoral commissioner of the state, Gesila Khan,who said that the places which elections will hold in this Saturday includes all the wards in Emohua local government area, wards 1, 2, 7, 9, 10 and 11 in Opobo-Nkoro local government area, wards 1, 2, 3, 4, 11, 12 and 13 in Ahoada-East Constituency 1, wards 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 in Ahoada-East Constituency 2, wards 10, 12, 17, 18 and 19 in Etche Constituency 1 and wards 1, 7, 8, 13 and 15 in Etche Constituency 2.
This is coming on the back of reactions and motions against the conduct of the gubernatorial elections, held in Rivers State on the 11th of April, 2015, which saw the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerge the winner through its candidate, Barrister Nyesom Wike.
International Observers at the elections have said that the gubernatorial elections in Rivers State was not free and fair, while the outgoing governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, who an All Progressives Congress (APC) stalwart has vehemently rejected the results declared by INEC, describing the elections as a “sham ” and a “daylight robbery.”
INEC has also fixed April 18 for the run-off governorship elections in Imo and Abia where last Saturday’s elections were declared inconclusive while the re-run in Taraba State will be held on April 25.
