The Rio Olympic games has witness a Nigerian, Aruna Quadri as the first African ever to make it to the quarter finals of the men’s single table tennis event.
On Monday’s (August 8) match, Quadri beat his German opponent, Boll Timo, 4 – 2 to seal a historic berth in the thrilling quarter finals of men’s single table tennis championship.
The quarter finals marks the intense part of any competitive sports and Quadri has definitely reached his peak at the right time at the Olympics.
Prior to yesterday’s win, he was at an equal standing with, Segun Toriola – who recently crashed out of the game on Saturday, August 7, at the second round when he was beaten 4 – 2 by Japanese challenger, Niwa Koki.
But after an amazing display on Sunday where Quadri rustled up the Round 3 by beating Chinese Taipei’s Chuang Chih-Yuan 4-0, and therefore exceeded his Nigerian counterpart.
Meanwhile, the game got intense when the German star, Boll, ranked number 10 in Rio, nearly thwarted Quarid’s sport during the 4th and 5th set; winning 11 – 3, 11 – 5 respectively. However the Nigerian over came at the 6th set and hustled his way to the quarter finals by winning 11-9.
In other-words, in 10 minutes, Quadri blew away his German opponent, winning the first three sets 12-10 12-10, 12-5, thus making history as the first African table tennis player to go this far.
