Rangers FC of Enugu Clinch Nigeria Premier League Title


Rangers FC Enugu have clinched the Nigeria Professional Football League title.

Rangers, also known as the Flying Antelopes have substantively emerged as the NPFL champions for the 2015/16 season.

The Flying Antelopes defeated Ikorodu United 2 goals to 1 away from home at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Abeokuta on Sunday.

Rangers survived a late goal from Ikorodu United to win their first NPFL title in 32 years.

Rangers emerged from a 32-year title jinx with blazing form throughout the season to emerge winners.

In the last five matches, the Flying Antelopes have only lost twice.

Relegated Ikorodu United gave them a pretty tough run and tried all they could to “spoilers” Ranger’s chances, but could not make good.

Enugu Rangers got their first goal from striker Obinna Nwobodo with a stunning strike.

Later in the first half came another goal from Chisom Egbuchulam sealing their win.

Fellow title contenders, Wikki Tourists and Rivers United failed to get the desired results in their respective games.

Ifeanyi Ubah FC ,however, defeated Enyimba FC of Aba by a lone goal.

With today’s win, Rangers have secured an uncontestable 60 points, staying 3 points ahead of Rivers United.

Even if they happen to lose their last game at home against El-Kanemi warriors next weekend, Rangers would still be points ahead.

Rivers United would have to beat Akwa United by as much as a 5-goal margin to overtake Rangers at the top.

Going by their goal scoring records this season, Rivers United have not defeated any team by such margin.

Meanwhile, Ranger’s Emeka Eze clinched the N100,000 NPFL prize for Wonder Goal of the season.


In other important week-37 Fixtures on Sunday, Heartland defeated Kano Pillars 1-0 to inch out of the relegation zone going into the last round of games.

MFM Football Club in their game lost woefully to Niger Tornadoes with a 3-1 defeat.

Wikki Tourists lost 1-0 in Ibadan against Shooting Stars, while Akwa United and Nasarawa United drew 2-2.

Rivers United were held to a stalemate goalless at home against Abia Warriors.
