PDP Spokesman, Chief Olisa Metuh, yesterday slipped off a swivel chair and landed on his waist as members of the National Working Committee of the PDP watched in awe. The incident happened at the National Working Committee, NWC, meeting hall at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Metuh who came into the hall while the chairman of the party, Ali Modu Sheriff was already seated, was about taking the seat reserved for him as he came into the hall to witness the inauguration of the caretaker committees of the party in Borno and Kebbi states when the chair rolled backward, causing him to miss the seat. Security operatives attached to Senator Sheriff and those that stood at the entrance of the hall, rushed to his rescue, but were too late as he was already on the floor.
Metuh kept writhing in pain for about three minutes due to the impact of the fall before he was eventually assisted by two policemen out of the venue of inauguration ceremony.
Punch reports that the PDP spokesman, who was dressed in a French safari suit, had earlier complained of “serious back ache” when he met journalists at the secretariat less than 30 minutes to the incident, and confirming the report, Senator Sheriff who watched keenly as the national Publicity Secretary was being helped out of the NWC hall turned to the national treasurer Bala Buhari who was seated to his left and said “He (Metuh) had been complaining of waist pain lately”.
It was gathered that Metuh who was later rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja, could not walk into the hospital by himself as he was carried into the hospital on a stretcher. Metuh is said to be currently receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the National Hospital in Abuja.
According to another source, the PDP spokesman had a spinal surgery and had a disc implant at his back. He said:
“Since after the surgery the doctor had asked him not to stay at a particular place for a long period of time. However since his trial, the PDP spokesperson has been known to either sit or stand at a particular point for a long period of time in court”.
The accident slowed down the ceremony, which was about to begin for about 10 minutes.
