The Police headquarters have confirmed sealing off Sharks Stadium in Port Harcourt, the venue of the national convention of the supposed Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).
It was gathered that policemen stormed the PDP convention venue around 4am on Wednesday. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), security operatives have denied delegates, journalists entry into the stadium.
“The warring parties need to follow due process to end their crisis through the courts and as a law enforcement agency what do you do? You ensure that there is a superior court order. It is not about taking sides.
“If in the next one hour or two, we get another court order, we will take action. We are there for every Nigerian but when you are the first responder, you have to take action, you have to be proactive.”
Two judges had on Monday delivered contradictory rulings with the same effect on the subject matter.
Justice Ibrahim Watila of the Port Harcourt Division ruled emphatically that the party’s convention being organised by the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee should go on, ordering the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Department of State Services (DSS) and the police to provide legal cover for the exercise, while Justice Okon Abang of the Abuja Division barred the convention from holding.
As the two divisions are of co-ordinate jurisdiction, the disputants have decided to pick and choose which order they would obey.
The Makarfi-led committee said yesterday that the convention would proceed today without fail as ordered by Justice Watila, preferring to ignore the rulings of Justice Abang that not only suspended the exercise on Monday but ordered INEC, DSS and the police to stop it from holding.
