The immediate past First Lady of Nigeria, Dame Patience Jonathan, is known to posses a very strong character as she is always bold to air her views no matter who gets offended.
She has been known to be firm with her words, especially on issues that bothers on the place of women in the society
Recall that President Buhari, during a joint press briefing with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, had laughed off his wife’s statement that she may not support him if he runs again in 2019 saying:
“I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.”
Shocked by his comment, the German Chancellor was prompted to give him a short glare and a laugh.
Nevertheless, recall that Patience Jonathan, known for her zeal in working towards promoting the rights of women and children, had spoken like a prophet who had seen the future in December, 2104 during the Presidential campaign when she urged Nigerian women and girls to quit limiting themselves because of a long-existent status quo, clearly stating that it was wrong to relegate women to the kitchen.
Back then, she had said:
“Nigerian women should no longer go back to the kitchen. It is not our portion to go back to the kitchen.
“We have women that are capable. We can contribute our quota to the development of Nigeria.”
Meanwhile, sequel to the the fiery criticism that has trailed President Muhammadu Buhari’s remark about the place of his wife, Presidential Media aide Garba Shehu, has taken to his official Twitter account to defend his boss, saying he was only joking.
He explained that the President respects women and believes in their abilities, citing the appointment of Kemi Adeosun, finance minister, as a demonstration of his regard for the women folk.
According to several media sources, the German chancellor has mocked President Muhamadu Buhari over his response to his wife’s interview. However, how exactly she did it is unclear.
