Nigerian citizens are fuming with rage following unconfirmed reports that the federal government has directed telecommunication firms to increase prices of their internet data subscription packages.

The report, which emerged from a source on Nairaland Forum with the nickname Abuleoshi, who cited an insider in one of the GSM companies, said data price will go up by December 1, 2016.

Information about the price increase follow an order by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) to Etisalat, MTN, Airtel and Glo to start using a fixed minimum pricing template.

According to the Nairaland contributor, as from December 1, 2016, the regular N1,000 for 1.5GB might be reduced to 1GB or 500MB for the same price of N1,000. This is how Abuleoshi broke the news:

As an insider in one of the GSM companies, i can reliably inform you that data rate will go up 1st December, 2016. NCC has mandated all GSM Companies to raise data rates. This is sad, Nigerians should not accept it, Nigerian Government through its agencies should not make life harder for Nigerians!

N1000 Will be 500MB from December 1st 2016.

The recent development is reportedly to help government generate more revenue.

Although the report has not yet been confirmed by the NCC, it has been met with outrage by Nigerians who have already started pouring invective on the federal government over the proposed tariff increase.

Here’s what commentators on the forum are saying about the impending increase in the data price:

Ehisanolu: “Imagine….why would NCC mandate them to increase data rates? na wa ooo…does it mean that etisalat that stopped the BB service will later increase the rates? it is well”

Sheylarhh: Thunder fire NCC if d info is true

ekpeye responded to the above comment saying: call mtn 180, that’s the first information they will give you. God! shocked… I just did that and I’ve come to realize it’s true…Useless government.

Abuleoshi: Lie “dick-tector” the joke will be on you in 2 weeks time when it is announced by the networks!
The essence of me shouting out is to get people to protest against this proposed hike in Data price. Easier to protest against NCC’s induced price increment than wait till December 1st when the increment is implemented.

Price of Data will increase. No network will offer you N1000 for 1.5GB from December 1st. I can confirm that N5000 will give you 5GB instead of 10GB. This an NCC’s directive to GSM networks.
