The Nigerian Universities Commission NUC, has approved and now recognizes the newly established Eastern Palm University In Ogboko, Imo State, as the 42nd state university and the 143rd university in Nigeria.
Yesterday, April 12, Governor Rochas Okorocha was at the National Universities Commission, to submit the Law and Order Planning Document for the university, to be known as Eastern Palm University, Ogboko, in Ideato South Local Council of the state, while calling for the classification of Nigerian universities, as being practiced in advanced nations.
NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, while presenting the certificate of recognition to Gov. Okorocha urged the governor to put everything in place, in order to ensure a smooth takeoff of the university.
Gov. Okorocha reveals that the long journey to establishing the university is now history, and because of his love for education, had proposed to move the entire Imo State University to the place, but for political exigencies, that was not possible and hence the need to establish the Eastern Palm University.
According to him, the State House of Assembly had accented to the establishment of the Eastern Palm University, to bring human capital development closer to the people.
Okorocha mentioned that plans are also underway to establish three more universities in the state, because education is our number one industry, adding that plans have been made to establish the Imo Layola University, Imo Catholic University, and Imo Anglican University.
The Governor also mentioned that in 2016, Imo records the highest registration of students in Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination hence, the need for more universities in the state.
In his address at the event, the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof Julius Okojie, called for an adoption of martial plan for education in Nigeria.
