Governor of Imo state Rochas Okorocha, while addressing a delegation of the Igbo Elders Forum on Friday 15th January, at the state house in Owerri, dismissed the present agitation for Biafra saying that,“Biafra has long been dead with Ojukwu and not even Amadioha can resurrect it”. He told the delegation that they should be appreciative of President Muhammadu Buhari for arresting a criminal and terrorist like Nnamdi Kanu who merits to be persecuted by hanging.
The governor went further to say,
”On behalf of all the state governors in the Eastern region, we have unanimously agreed with Mr President, Muhammadu Buhari not to release that terrorist and troublesome boy who does not know his root. Nigeria will remain as one and the igbos will be part of it”
Okorocha also warned that very soon, many youths will lose their lives in the name of the Biafran struggle and further reminded the elders that even Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, the former Biafran leader, made it crystal clear that another war of secession was not necessary before he passed on in 2011.
In the same vein, Ohaneze Ndi Igbo, which is the highest Igbo socio-cultural group, on Friday, washed their hands off the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu and his followers in their fight for the actualization of a sovereign state of Biafra.
While speaking to reporters in Akwa, Dr. Chris Eluomunoh, the Chairman, Forum of State Presidents of Ohaneze in the seven Igbo-speaking states, described Mr. Kanu’s pursuit as madness stating that nobody in his right mind would support the group.
According to him,
“You will notice that Ohanaeze has been very silent on the issue of Biafra insurgency, though the youth wing of Ohanaeze has been speaking on it. Ohanaeze, as the Igbo cultural group, cannot support Biafra and we dissociate ourselves from it totally.
“Igbo people have contributed much to the development of Nigeria and we cannot allow some people to jeopardise the lives and efforts of millions of Igbo residing in all parts of Nigeria.
“We believe that anybody who has any issue to settle with the Federal Government should use dialogue and that is why we participated in the last National Conference. No sane Igbo person would want to witness a repeat of the kind of thing that happened during the Civil War.
“Chief Odumegwu Ojukwu, who led the Biafra war, returned to Nigeria from exile and contested elections in Nigeria, which showed that he was fully integrated into Nigeria and was a full-fledged Nigerian before he died.”
Dr. Chris countered the notion that the Independent People Of Biafra enjoy the support of Igbo politicians stating that it is a blatant lie. He revealed that the group gets its support from outside the country.
Eluomunoh however, observed that the reason for the agitation was due to the lack of infrastructure in the South-Eastern part of the country and appealed to the president to start dealing with the infrastructural degeneration in the area.
He said, “We know the marginalisation was not caused by him, but we plead that he should look into the problems being complained about by the people of South East and South–South. He has won the election and we in Ohanaeze support him and will work with him for the unity of the country.”
I am led to say that if neither the Igbo Elders Forum nor the Ohaneze Ndi Igbo supports the pursuit of a Biafran nation, then Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and his team could merely be exhibiting youthful exuberance.
