Team Nigeria wins first gold medal at the ongoing 2016 Rio Paralympic Games.
Nigerian athlete, Roland Ezuruike picked up the country’s first gold medal at the Rio Paralympics in weight-lifting.
Ezuruike won the 54Kg event in a rather astonishing manner.
The Nigerian weightlifter has also set 3 Paralympics records, and he hopes to win the top prize.
Also, earlier in the day, Nigerian weightlifter, Latifat Tijani won silver for Nigeria as well.
She lifted 106kg in the 45kg category to come second behind China’s Dandan Hu.
Over the years, the physically challenged Nigerian athletes have performed better at their Olympic games despite their condition.
Team Nigeria performed rather poorly at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio.
Team Nigeria Wins First Gold At Rio 2016 Paralympics
Nigeria was only able to pull a single medal (bronze) courtesy of the Dream Team VI in football.
Nigerian Paralympians first competed in Barcelona 2000 where they won 3 gold medals. to finish 35th in the medal table.
Team Nigeria was then placed to 35th on the medals table.
In 1996 while the original Dream Team were celebrated for their golden victory, the Paralympics Team fared even better.
They won three gold, two silver and three bronze medals for Nigeria.
At the Sydney 2000 Olympics, the Nigerian Paralympics team again performed remarkably.
They had their most successful outing at ay Olympic Games so far, winning 7 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals.
This feat saw them landing 22nd position in the overall medals table.
In 2004, the Paralympians again performed way better than their main Olympics counterparts.
Nigeria’s Paralympics team returned home with 12 medals comprising 5 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.
They finished 28th in the overall medals table.
History was again repeated in Beijing 2008 as well as London 2012 as Nigeria’s Paralympians had yet another successful outing.
With the Rio 2016 Paralympics barely a few days gone, Nigeria’s Paralympic team are already blazing the trail.
