Joseph Yobo is a Nigerian professional footballer who played in the national team Super Eagles. The football star who was born on 6th September 1980 in Kono, a community in the Khana area of Rivers State Nigeria maintained his position as the captain of the Nigerian national team Super Eagles until his international football retirement in June 2014.
Joseph Yobo left the shores of Nigeria to join Standard Liège in 1998. After his first team debut in 2000, he went on to appear 46 times, and in 2001, he was bought by Marseille.

Following a brief courtship between Joseph Yobo and former, MBGN Adaeze Igwe ( now Adaeze Yobo), the footballer married her in a midnight ceremony held in Jos. The wedding was done in a very low key ceremony barely three months after they met each other in December 2009. Shortly after the wedding, the couple welcomed a baby boy named Joey Yobo in April 2010
However, there are speculations that the duo are trying to hide their marital troubles from the press and general public.
After suffering a hamstring injury in the 2010 African Cup of Nations, It was widely rumoured in the Nigerian media that Yobo went to Pastor T.B. Joshua.
In July 2008, his younger brother Norum was kidnapped in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria and held for ransom for 12 days until he was eventually released on 17 July 2008.
As a former Nigeria international, Joseph Yobo represented the Super Eagles at three FIFA World Cups and six Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
Yobo made his senior international debut against Zambia in a 2002 FIFA World Cup qualifier on March 24, 2001 after participating in Nigeria’s race to the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship quarter-finals.
He took part in all six of the Super Eagles matches in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations and was included in the team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup which they qualified for.
Joseph Yobo took over as the captain of the Super Eagles in 2010 after the international retirement of team mate Nwankwo Kanu. At the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, though not exactly the best defender anymore, Yobo lifted the trophy after appearing as an 89th minute substitute at their 1-0 final defeat of Burkina Faso.
Yobo was included in Stephen Keshi’s squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. On 30 June, he captained the Super Eagles of Nigeria against France at his 100th international appearance and after scoring an own goal in the 2–0 defeat, Yobo announced his international retirement.
After making his debut in 2000, Joseph Yobo was loaned to Tenerife. He later returned to Marseille after about nine months before joining Everton again on loan in July 2002. He became the first signing of David Moyes. Later in 2003, an option to make the move permanent was taken up and completed in 2003 after a dispute between Yobo and Marseille was settled.
Yobo became one of the most consistent players in the Everton squad.
Though there were rumors of a move to Arsenal after a delay in signing a new contract with the club in 2006, on 15 April 2007, Yobo became the record appearance holder for an overseas player at Everton, a record he held until early 2012.
On 25 October 2007, Yobo was named as captain in the absence of Phil Nevill making him the first African to captain the club.
On 29 November 2009, Joseph Yobo scored an own goal in Everton’s 2–0 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby. Thus, Distin, Jagielka and John Heitinga were increasingly selected over Yobo, confining him to the bench.
Yobo signed a one year contract with Fenerbahçe on 31 August 2010. He played in 30 official matches in the club and scored a goal, helping his team win the league title. After the first contract expired, Fenerbahçe and Everton agreed on another loan deal for €700,000 and Yobo signed a one-year contract worth €2.35 million on September 6 2011.
On 4 August 2012, he re-signed for Fenerbahçe once again, but on a permanent basis on a 3-year contract, after playing for Everton for 10 years. Based on a mutual agreement, his contract with Fenerbahce was terminated before the 2014-2015 season. On 31 August 2014, he was awarded with the plaque of appreciation and was released from Fenerbahce.
Yobo returned to England on loan at Norwich City on 30 January 2014 for the remainder of the season with high hopes of a permanent move in the summer. On 8 February, he marked his first debut for the club with a clean sheet against top-scoring club Manchester City.
