Banky W

Olubankole Wellington, stage name, Banky W is a Nigerian singer and rapper. He comfortably occupies a prestigious space in the Nigerian music scene as he is widely considered one of the most eligible bachelors in Nigeria.


Bank W was born in 1981 in the United States of America. His father hails from Badagry while his mother is from Calabar in Cross River State.

At five years of age, they moved back to Nigeria where he would remain for the next 12 years, attending Corona Primary School, Home Science Association Secondary School and Ajao Secondary School all in Lagos, before finally going back to the US for college. He studied Industrial Engineering from RPI in New York.

He was in his junior year in RPI when he started writing, producing and hitting the studio in order to release something while in the USA.


Banky W mostly sticks to his niche as an R & B artist. He came onto the scene with his 2003 EP release, Undeniable. He followed that up with Back in the Building – 2005, Mr. Capable – 2008, The W Experience – 2009 and R&BW – 2013,

R&BW was released a day after Valentine of 2013. He launched the album with a concert tagged the “The Grand Love Concert” at the Civic Centre, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos where he featured several other artistes including Iyanya, Waje and many others.

Standout singles from Bank W’s career will include; Lowkey, Yes/No, All I Want Is You Feat. Chidinma, Ebute metta, Capable, My regret and Jasi.

He also has a compilation album, empire mates state of mind to his resume.


Banky W is no stranger to awards or even endorsements. Some of his awards since he came on the scene in 2003 include;

  • Best Male R&B Artiste, Urban Independent Music Awards, USA, 2006
  • Best International Album, Nigerian Entertainment Awards 2007 for ‘Mr Capable’
  • Best R&B Video, Nigerian Music Video Awards 2008 for ‘Don’t Break My Heart’
  • Best Male Vocal Performance, Hip hop World Awards 2009 for ‘Don’t Break My Heart’
  • R&B Single of the year, 2010 Hip Hop World Awards for ‘Strong Ting’
  • Best R&B Singer (Male) and Best Music Video 2010 City People Entertainment Awards

He, along with Nigerian female rapper Sasha P, were the first official ambassadors of Samsung electronics in Nigeria. His most popular endorsement would however be for prestigious vodka brand Ciroc. The brand had said of Banky W and Dbanj;

When it comes to marriage, Banky has been tagged the perpetual bachelor. He attends weddings every Saturday but is yet to invite anyone to his. To the constant pressure from fans and friends alike, Banky has maintained that he will marry when he chooses to.

Banky W has been linked recently in romantic terms to Adesua Etomi and Niyola in a series of posts on Snapchat. The singer has however revealed that he would likely be threading the path of a secret wedding when he does want to commit.
