Former President Goodluck Jonathan has raised an alarm, citing a move by a Niger Delta militant group, Movement for Emancipation of Niger Delta, MEND, to terminate his life.
This is coming after reports by some online news medium, claim that a splinter group of the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), which goes by the name Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA), had alleged that some chieftains of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), including former President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, Senate Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio and former National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Olisa Metuh were sponsors of the group.
Goodluck Jonathan in a statement released on Sunday by his media aide, Ikechukwu Eze, denied the claims that he was behind the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers as alleged in a pressed statement by one dim character masquerading as ‘Cynthia White’ who had in the past served as the spokesperson for a notorious group.
Part of the statement read:
“Our attention has been drawn to a malicious claim by a shadowy group which calls itself the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) to the effect that many notable Ijaw and other Niger Delta leaders and elders, especially those perceived not to be too close to the powers that be, are the alleged sponsors of the current crises in the Niger Delta.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we are fully convinced that such an idiotic claim is too cheap a narrative, a facile contrivance so badly concocted that any discerning mind would easily see through its disingenuous and duplicitous nature.
“Since it is not in our place to speak for all those named in the obvious fabrication, we are only intervening to the extent that its hidden intent poses a violent threat to the life of former President Dr. Goodluck
“Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, a committed patriot who the Almighty God has given the grace and good health to rededicate his life to the service of humanity, after serving his dear nation as President to the best of his abilities.”
The ex-President said he has to respond to the allegation because of the hidden intent of violent threat it poses to him. He linked the allegation to the various attempts on his life by MEND in the past, alleging that the accusation that he was a grand patron of NDA was a continuation of that plot.
Governor Wike, has also denied sponsoring NDA or any militant group. In a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, Wike, accused the APC of being responsible for the “false propaganda”.
“We unequivocally deny this false report fabricated by online medium with the aim of diverting attention from the superlative performance of Wike,” Nwakaudu said.
Akpabio also denied the allegation, describing the publication as “baseless, reckless and senseless. In a statement released by his media aide, Anietie Ekong, the Minority Snate leader, Godswill Akpabio said:
“It is a fabrication from the pit of hell from those who are profiteering from the crisis in the Niger Delta and would wish no end to it.”
