The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), has declared the withdrawal of their support for the Niger Delta Avengers.
This change of position by the group is coming just few days after they stated that they were strongly behind the militant group following the ultimatum which they issued to seven state governors demanding the release of pro-Biafra agitators who were detained in police and military custody in their respective states.
However, after a meeting held in Aba, Abia state on Thursday, the faction of MASSOB under the leadership of Chief Ralph Uwazuruike changed its mind on the decision of the Uchenna Madu-led faction of the group.
According to Sunny Okereafor, the national director of information, the group is distancing itself from the activities of the militant group because it does not believe in violence as a means of agitation. He said:
“Right from the day of the formation of MASSOB, our leader, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike was emphatic on our modus operandi, that, we will not use violence in the struggle and we’ve maintained that.
“It will, therefore, be out of place for any genuine MASSOB member to say he is supporting what the NDA is doing in the Niger Delta region -destroying oil facilities which were built with the peoples’ money.”
Mr. Okereafor further stated that no true MASSOB member would want to associate himself with the Avengers group which he believes has destruction as its mission. In addition he stated:
“By accepting to dialogue with the federal government, it means NDA leaders have agreed to dialogue away the future of their children and MASSOB should have nothing to do with such a group because we believe in the sanctity of Biafra which will be achieved through peaceful means.
“We could have welcomed them if they had renounced violence, do away with their plans to dialogue with anybody and demanded a country of their own.”
The spokesman for MASSOB’s went on to disclose that those who claim membership of the pro-Biafran group and are in support of the militant’s violence are no longer members of the movement.
He therefore urged members of the public to disapprove any claim made by anybody on behalf of the group, maintaining that the group’s authentic leader remains Solomon Chukwu, who was reportedly carefully chosen by members last year.
According to Punch, Chief Solomon Chukwu, the leader of MASSOB has also explained the relationship between Biafra and the Niger Delta Avengers, speaking through his national director of information.
