A heavy explosion has rocked the busy Musa Usman Secretariat main Gate in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. According to a report, the incident which took place at about 11:40 am this morning, Thursday May 12, has left two persons dead and scores injured.
A male suicide bomber disguised as a lunatic blew himself up at the state secretariat along post office area in Maiduguri. He reportedly carried out the act at the entrance of the complex where security operatives usually conduct checks.
Only the suicide bomber was killed with a policeman at his duty post. The area has since been cordoned off by military troops and men of the Civilian JTF.
Governor Kashim Shettima is said to have visited the scene of the blast and the state hospital where the victims are being treated.
However, it is should be noted that this is coming about 24 hours after a suicide bomber reportedly killed himself in an attempt to enter a mosque in Maiduguri, leaving 6 people injured.
It was gathered that two suicide bombers, suspected to be member of Boko Haram sect, stormed the mosque in Sulimanti ward of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, yesterday disguised as worshippers and attempted to enter the mosque, although one escaped without detonating his IED.
A source who pleaded anonymity said: “the suicide bomber who disguised as a worshipper attempted to enter the nearby Masalacin Kofar Shehu Councillor (mosque) when Muslim faithful were performing their morning prayers, but the IEDs he was carrying exploded few metres to the mosque leaving the suicide bomber dead with few others who were about to enter the mosque injured.”
Another source who is a resident of Sulimanti, by name Mallam Ali Aji who claimed to be in the mosque when the explosion occurred said: “immediately after the blast, worshippers had to desert the mosque for dear lives, before men of the civilian JTF and military arrived the scene and cordon off the whole area, as I am speaking to you now, the charred body of the suicide bomber is scattered all over the place”.
