Osun Hijab Controversy: Deeper Life Supports Pupils Wearing Christian Garments

Deeper Life Bible Church on Sunday, lent its support to the action taken by Christian students over the hijab controversy in schools across Osun State.

The church said the use of Hijab by Muslim pupils in schools and other forms of intolerance have confirmed that ‘there is great confusion’ and danger in the state.

This was made known by the FCT Overseer of DLBC, Pastor Joshua Esho, during a press briefing on Sunday evening in Abuja to herald the “Night of Extraordinary Wonders” which is expected to host over 100,000 guests.

Following a State High Court ruling which legalized the use of hijab by female Muslim students, the Osun State chapter of CAN had earlier directed Christian students in the state to wear church garments to school if the state government went ahead to implement the ruling.

In compliance with a directive, Christian students in most public schools run by the Osun State government, last week appeared in schools in church robes.

The High Court had two weeks ago ruled that female Muslim students should be allowed to wear hijab in all primary and secondary schools owned by the state government.

Hijab controversy

The court, presided over by Justice Jide Falola, in a 51-page judgment held that any act of molestation, harassment, torture and humiliation against Muslim students using hijab constitutes an infringement on their fundamental right as contained in Section 38 of the 1999 constitution as amended.

The state’s CAN chapter declared its intention to appeal against the judgment, and accused Governor Rauf Aregbesola of influencing the High Court ruling.

Meanwhile, the Osun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned security agencies, Interpol, the Presidency and United Nations of the possibility of the state being plunged into a religious crisis by Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

In a statement issued in Osogbo by the PDP spokesperson, Prince Diran Odeyemi, the party said the embarrassment and the insincerity of Governor Aregbesola over the hijab issue is a diversionary tactic to cover up his mismanagement of the state human and material resources.

The PDP said it is particularly happy that the issue of hijab has exposed to the entire country the character of Osun State governor and his divide and rule system of diverting people’s attention against his inadequate knowledge of governance and total mismanagement of the state.
