Heavily armed hoodlums reportedly attacked a community in Enugu state on Wednesday August 24, killing one person. The unidentified hoodlums stormed a densely populated area of the town known as Obiagu shooting sporadically, killing one ‘Ayaka’.
Enugu State Police Command reports that two of the gunmen were later apprehended by men of the command after a fierce gun battle. Reports say two of the hoodlums were also apprehended by men of the police.
Sources revealed that the victim, a heavily built middle-aged man named ‘Ayaka’ was a very popular figure in the area and also a commercial bus driver.
According to eye witnesses, the heavily-armed men numbering about 10 and wearing bulletproof vests, stormed Obiagu at about 5:00pm and fired several shots into the air before shooting several times at Ayaka while he was drinking at a local bar with other customers.

Residents and shop owners in the area were thrown into panic on hearing the loud gunshot sounds.The sound of the gunshots caused panic in the highly populated area, as people, including residents, visitors and shop owners fled in different directions to safety.
A particular eyewitness account said the gunmen approached the bar, where Ayaka was drinking alongside other customers. On sighting him, the armed hoodlums then shot at him several times, only stopping when they confirmed he was dead.
According to reports from the police, no other casualty was reported during the attack. Eyewitnesses further disclosed that the said gunmen dispossessed other customers in the bar of their valuables.
The hoodlums later escaped in two Toyota Camry cars and a Sienna mini bus. The attack lasted for about 20 minutes.
The gunmen were later engaged in a shootout with men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), Enugu state police command along the popular Bisalla road in Independence Layout.
Spokesman of the Enugu state police command, Ebere Amaraizu, confirmed the incident. He also disclosed that two of the hoodlums were killed in the shootout, while two others were arrested.
According to a statement released by the Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Ojukwu, the armed hoodlums had operated around the Edingburgh/ogui new layout axis and some other parts of town in the afternoon.
Ojukwu who lauded the effort of his operatives leading to the arrest of two of the hoodlums, disclosed that:
“…Operatives of the command confronted them headlong and ensured that they did not have a free day. Meanwhile manhunt on other members of the gang are on as operatives are still combing.”
