Akwa Ibom State Governor Udom Emmanuel has had a close shave with death after he arrived at a church programme late.
The governor was supposed to attend the ordination service of the pastor of The Reigners Bible Church in Uyo.
According to a witness, The Reigners Bible Church, located along Uyo Village Road, was filled to capacity because its pastor was being consecrated as a Bishop, when the tragedy occurred.
According to eye witness accounts, no fewer than 50 people are feared dead under the collapsed building.
The witness said the Church was being renovated and upgraded because of the expected high number of guests on Saturday.
The witness said:
“Many people are buried under the debris as emergency workers continue rescue exercise. The governor has gone to the scene and is presently there helping with the rescue”
Governor Emmanuel was expected to attend the occasion, but sources say he was not at the church when the building collapsed.
Sources say many victims have been taken to various hospitals and mortuaries in the town. Though official figures have not been released, it is believed that some officials of the Akwa Ibom State government are part of the expected casualties.
