Globacom, has in the first quarter of 2016, widened its lead in the telecom sector with 80 per cent of new subscribers, consolidating its position as Nigeria’s preferred network for new data subscriptions.
Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) industry report for the first three months of the year indicated that Globacom recorded an additional 1,448,354 new internet subscribers during the period.
The number consists of 354,178 for January, 248,593 for February and 845,583 for March. This brought the company’s total internet customers to 26,530,420 as at the end of the quarter.
The network’s figure of 1,448,354 for the three months under review amounted to 80% of the total number of 1,820,651 new subscribers who used the internet services of the four key telecom operators in Nigeria in the first quarter of this year.
Airtel recorded 319,229 new data subscribers for the three months, while Etisalat had an addition of 53,068 new internet users on the network during the period. The combined figure for the two companies makes up 20% of the total figure of 1,820,651 new internet customers for the quarter.
MTN, on the other hand, suffered a massive decline in its internet subscriber figure during the quarter with over 6.5 million users leaving its network in just three months. MTN, kicked off the quarter with 39,924,737 data customers, but closed with 33,356,595.
In 2015, Globaco msoared away as the preferred choice of new internet subscribers. At the end of the last quarter of the year, Globacom emerged the only network that recorded an increase in its internet subscriber base.
The network had 23,285,454 internet users in October, 24,952,559 in November and 25,082,066 in December, which is an addition of 3.2 million new internet data subscriptions in the fourth quarter of 2015, while MTN, Airtel and Etisalat all lost subscribers within the period.
The January 2016 statistics which showed how the major operators fared over the last 12 months revealed that Glo garnered a total of 7,251,657 new internet users during the period.
Etisalat came second with a total of 5,431,190 new internet customers, while Airtel finished third with 961,548 new data customers in the 12 month period. On the other hand, MTN brought up the rear with a net loss of 1,059,160 data customers during the period.
