English football fans have expressed their displeasure as England fail to secure three points from their opening game at the ongoing Euro 2016 tournament.
England drew 1-1 against Russia despite dominating possession and several missed chances, including a disallowed goal.
Soccer analysts however believe that the English side were excellent throughout the match and deserved to win.
But rather than sympathize with the team, many English fans have immediately apportioned blame for the draw to the presence of five Tottenham Hottspurs players in the England squad.
Danny Rose, Kyle Walker, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Harry Kane all played the full 90 minutes. Crucially, they all played quite well, with Dier even scoring England’s goal.
Three Lions could not hang on to their lone goal lead for the victory. England however had the best of the game and went close several times in the first half, but couldn’t find an opening and went it level at half time.
After the break the Russians came out determined to stem the tide and had a spell of pressure on Joe Hart’s goal, but couldn’t make it count.
England Jinxed By Euro Opening Game History
Eric Dier’s superb free-kick was ironically cancelled out by a stoppage-time header by Denis Glushakov’s giving Russia the much needed equalizer.
Star player, Wayne Rooney insisted that his side’s performance against Russia deserved three points.
In an interview granted reporters after the match, he said;
“We played well. We had some good chances but didn’t take them.
“There were plenty of positives tonight, some really good football, creating chances and we looked solid for the 90 minutes.
“The performance was worthy of three points.”
The match ended with the Three Lions and Russia playing a 1-1 draw in their Euro 2016 Group B opener on Saturday.
Historically, England has never won their opening match at any European Championship. Russia’s heartbreaking injury time equalizer robbed England of three points and a well deserved victory.
