Ex Oil minister, Diezani Madueke who as of yet is undergoing a successful treatment for cancer in the United Kingdom stated that Nigeria has a good recorded history of speaking about its oil ministers in an abusively disparaging manner.
In an interview with Dele Momodu’s Boss Newspaper, Diezani Madueke revealed that even President Muhammad Buhari as an oil minister (1976-1978) under then head of state, General Olusegun Obasanjo was accused of N2.8 billion fraud when same amount got missing from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corpration’s (NNPC) Midlands Bank account in the UK. According to her, though Muhammadu Buhari swore in his 36-member cabinet and had appointed himself as head of the powerful petroleum ministry on November 11, he has been linked to fraud and nobody up till now has proven that to be true.
In the words of Diezani:
“Everyone agrees that Muhammadu Buhari is a man of unquestionable character and impeccable pedigree yet it was alleged that N2.8billion vanished under his nose. Fela even sang about this humongous disappearance. Till this day no one has been able to prove that the then Major General Buhari stole a kobo.”
She further mentioned other former ministers who have been downgraded including Prof. Tam David West.
She also claimed that the assertion of corruption leveled against her are not true and should not be trusted, restating that as a technocrat with the necessary and quality experience at Shell she was used to keeping proper accounts.
She revealed that during her time as a petroleum minster she knew she stepped on some powerful and strong toes both at home and abroad just to make sure that Nigerians got the most excellent agreement.
Alison-Madueke who has been bedridden in a London hospital following her removal as overseer of the oil ministry by the new government of President Buhari used to be the oil minister under ex-president Goodluck Jonathan from 2010 until earlier this year when he was defeated in the election by Muhammadu Buhari.
She has been accused of large-scale fraud in the management of the country’s multi-billion-dollar oil wealth but had denied any wrong doing.
Based on her statement, she left $5.6billion in the NLNG account, contrary to the report that she stole everything in the nation’s treasury before leaving office. She said
“I actually left $5.6billion in the NLNG alone but no one is talking about it. I’m not seeking to be praised but to be acknowledged that I made some little contributions.
“That money could have been wasted on frivolities but I was determined to keep something for the incoming government once we lost the election
Diezani was one of the most powerful officials of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration and has consistently denied any wrongdoing while in office including stealing a dime from the Nigerian treasury. Though she was accused of stealing $6 billion dollars of Nigeria’s Oil Revenue, Diezani is yet to be proven guilty.
