Mikel Captain of Siasia’s Squad For Rio Olympics
Chelsea defensive midfielder Mikel Obi and Chippa United goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi were named as the over-aged players that will fly the country’s colours in Brazil.
Mikel, who failed to attend the Beijing 2008 Olympics where Nigeria won a silver medal, is believed to have been keen on going to Brazil. As a result, he has been included in the list as one of the over-aged players.
Reports from sources at the Nigeria Football Federation say that coach Samson Siasia opted for two senior players instead of the mandatory three as the competition kicks off in Brazil next month.
Nigeria’s Dream Team VI will play in Group B at the Rio 2016 Olympics alongside Sweden, Colombia and Japan.
Coach Siasia is hopeful his squad will win gold and repeat the feat of the Dream Team who won gold in the 1996 Olympics.
