GEJ Refused to Clean Up Ogoni land – Rotimi Amaechi

The Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi said, when he was the governor of Rivers State, he asked former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to clean up Ogoni land but he refused.

Rotimi made this statement on Thursday June 2, 2016, at the flag-off of the clean-up Ogoni land, stating that GEJ turned deaf ears to the sufferings of the Ogoni People.

The minister who acknowledged the presence of the Rivers state Governor, Nyesom Wike, also thanked President Buhari for implementing the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report and fulfilling his campaign promise.

Rotimi Amaechi also said that he did everything possible as a sitting government to make the president implement the UNEP report, everything. But the report was not implemented after all.

According to reports, Buhari was expected in Rivers state for the flag-off ceremony on Thursday 2 June, but he cancelled his trip, due to assassination threats by the Niger Delta Avengers Terrorist Group.

Although Governor Wike had promised to increase security to ensure the President’s safety when he comes, that was not enough guarantee for Buhari, as he chose not to make the trip. Some Nigerians expressed their disappointment on social media, over Buhari’s decision to cancel his visit to Ogoni land. Even the expectations of people of Ogoni Land were greatly watered down as they had prepared for the presidential arrival.

The Rivers state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) also thanked the President for fulfilling his promise to the Ogoni people. However, President Buhari was represented at the flag-off ceremony by his Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

This cancelled trip would have been Buhari’s first trip to the south-south region since he became president, unfortunately, the first trip would have to be made next time.
