“At the moment translation/revision is going on in over 12 Nigerian languages, adding that it costs a minimum of N40 million to complete a Bible translation project,”the national president said.
The society said it has donated assorted Bibles worth N13.8 million to the less privileged, prisoners and people with visual impairment last year. “Through such donations we are able to subsidize the cost of the Bible and give free copies to those who cannot afford to buy.”
He however called on on churches and the public to support its project with prayers, as well as financial support.
“Pray for our work and if you desire to support the project send cheque should be addressed directly to the Bible Society of Nigeria.”
The Bible Society of Nigeria was founded on 8th February, 1966 through the pioneering efforts of the late Dr. Francis Ezeogo Akanu Ibiam, the first indigenous Governor of the defunct Eastern Region. Dr. Ibiam had earlier in 1965 consulted with representatives of most of the Churches (Church organizations) in Nigeria on the need to form a National Bible Society in Nigeria. It was the unanimous decision of that meeting that the Bible Society of Nigeria be formed which consequently led to its formation and inauguration on February 8, 1966.
Before 1966, the Society was under the supervision of the British and Foreign Bible Society [BFBS] which had operated in Nigeria as far back as 1807. Ross J. Manning, who was the representative of the BFBS in West Africa during the independent era, became the first General Secretary of The Bible Society of Nigeria.
Then the Bible House, Apapa was established and was served as a distribution centre to other neighbouring West African countries. Today, the BSN has six Bible depots pan in Nigeria, distributes over one million copies of the Bible yearly and has completed Bible translation in 24 Nigerian Languages.
