  • Scientists in Belgium has created ‘Sewer to Brewer’ machine that recycles peoples urine into a drinkable beer.

Scientists has yet again invented a machine which uses solar energy to transform urine into drinkable water that would be used to brew beer.

According to international media report, the team of researchers at Ghent University said that unlike other options for treating waste water, their new system is more energy-efficient and could be applied in areas off the electricity grid.

Not only could they recover pure water from urine, other nutrients found can be used to make fertilizer for crops. One of the researchers, Dr. Sebastiaan Derese, who worked on the device, said:

“We’re able to recover fertilizer and drinking water from urine using just a simple process and solar energy.”

Researchers were able to collect as much as 1,000 litres of water from recycled excretes of revelers.

How the Device for Urine recycling Works

The researchers explained that the device collects urine in a large tank, heating it using a solar-powered boiler. The heated excrete then passes through a membrane, which separates out the water, as well as nutrients such as potassium, nitrogen and phosphorous – which can be used to make fertilizers.

Using the slogan ‘peeforscience’ the scientists deployed the machine at a 10-day music and theatre festival in central Ghent. They were able to collect as much as 1,000 litres of water from recycled urine of revellers, and subsequently, use the water to make one of the world’s most coveted specialities – beer.

“We call it from ‘brewer to sewer’. And we hope to take the machine to rural communities in the developing world where fertilisers and reliable drinking water are short in supply.”

While the device could be used in sports venues or even airports to transform collected urine into water, the researchers hope that it could possibly have longer term uses.
