The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Bayelsa state, has disclosed the unfortunate situation which some National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members that served as makeshift staff to the commission during the state’s gubernatorial election have found themselves in.
According to New Telegraph, after the fierceness that accompanied the state governorship election on December 5 and 6, some corps members are still stuck in some violent areas in the state. The electoral body issued a statement on Monday, December 7 concerning the outcome of the election which was inconclusive, after it cancelled the rescheduled election in Southern Ijaw local government area of the state with massive violence. Security operatives are said to be making wild efforts to save the corps members from the violent areas.
A source from security who spoke on anonymity disclosed that the locations of some corps members are yet unknown. The source further stated that some of the corps members were injured while others were abducted during the attacks. The party thugs and ex-militants have been blamed for the gruesome attacks as they are believed to be doing the jobs they are told to do by their sponsors.
Governor Seriake Dickson confirmed the action, while speaking to newsmen last night. He said,
As we speak, we are in the process of working with community leaders and other partners to identify and retrieve youth corps members who were put in danger for no fault of theirs.
I like to use this opportunity to also commend them, these young wonderful Nigerians who came here to serve their fatherland. I want to assure them and all stakeholders who will participate in the rescheduled election and other activities that Bayelsa will continue to be home to them. The government of Bayelsa appreciates their sacrifice and will continue to partner with them to make our nation a better place.
The governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has criticised severely the administration of Buhari saying that everything under President Muhammadu Buhari is never conclusive while speaking about Bayelsa state gubernatorial election that was declared inconclusive by INEC.
