The history of books dates back to many years into the past. With the development of writing, of paper, of printing and down to the modern business of book publishing and the internet, hundreds of thousands of books have been produced. For over the last half century a good number of these books were not sold, which of course means that they did not get read. Only few of them have emerged as the most read books.

This list was compiled after a long project research carried out by some experts to ascertain the most read books in the world. Note however, that the list only shows the number of books printed and sold but did not take into account multiple readings of the same book.
