It is a well-known fact in Nigerian politics that the word “loyalty” does not exist. It is also a well-known political statement that in politics, especially Nigerian-based politics, there are no “permanent friends but only permanent interests.” And if this was a myth before now, it has today been played out before our very eyes.
The recent defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the polls has exposed how “disloyal” its members were, giving that, barely one week after the declaration of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the winner of the polls, there have been a massive exodus from the party to the APC which will be the ruling party in the ‘coming years,’ most assuredly, the next four years.
We bring to you some reported defections of the so-called ‘PDP heavyweights’ from the party they once bragged about to the APC. And all these are the ones recorded since March 31.
In Abia State, mother of the former state governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Elder (Mrs.) Eunice Uzor Kalu, leader of the Reality Organisation in the South-East and her members, together with Hon Nnanna Uzor Kalu, who is former member of the House of Representatives has joined the APC. Ex-Chief of Staff to Governor Theodore Orji, Mr. Mascot Uzor Kalu, has also joined the APC.
In Adamawa State, the immediate past political adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak, who initiated the Jonathan re-election campaign led the pack of defectors in the state. Also with him are, two serving senators, Ahmed Hassan Barata and Mohammed Bello Tukur representing Adamawa South and Central respectively, a former Deputy Senate Leader, Senator Jonathan Zwingina, former minister of health, Dr. Idi Hong, among several others.
In Benue State, Brigadier Gen Chris Onja (rtd) and former AGF Michael Aondoakaa has dumped the PDP, along with over 3000 PDP members, who all tore their party membership cards as they decamped to the APC at a ceremony in Benue state recently.
In Delta State, Warri billionaire and one of Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan’s political tacticians, Chief Ayiri Emami has defected APC.
In Edo, former governor, Osarhemen Osunbor has also decamped. Also, Gen. Charles Airhiavbere (rtd), who contested under the platform of the PDP in the 2012 governorship election in Edo State, has also defected to the APC. Untill his defection, he was the Edo State Coordinator of President Goodluck Jonathan Support Group. With him were, Coordinator of Grassroots Youths Initiative, Osarobo Idahosa and former Senatorial aspirant of PDP, Richard Lamai and 3000 former PDP members to defect to the APC at a rally held in Benin City.
In Ondo State, Dr. Olusola Oke, PDP governorship candidate in the 2012 and immediate past national legal adviser, alongside his two wives has joined the APC as well as former Commissioners under the Late Dr Olusegun Agagu administration; Princes Oladunni Odu, Ayo ifayefunmi, Olajide Ajana, former Senator Gbenga Ogunniya and Mrs Febi Adeyemi. The former Head of Service Alaba Isijola and a former member of the House of Representatives, Abayomi Sheba, and business tycoon, Mr Jimoh Ibrahim among others, were also among the defectors.
In Kwara, Gbemi Saraki, younger sister to Senator Bukola Saraki and the PDP youth leader in the state has defected to APC.
In Jigawa, the current deputy governor of the state, Ahmad Mahmud has also defected to APC
In Gombe State, the Majority Leader in the House of Assembly, Hon. Mamman Alkalio are among the hundreds of politicians who have defected to the APC from the PDP.
In Oyo State, Afeez Jimoh, who is a member of the House of Representatives, a former member of the House of Representatives, Folake Olunloyo-Osinowo, Tayo Sarumi, Dr. Azeez Adeduntan, PDP governorship aspirant, Chief (Mrs) Ayoka Lawani, Mr. Waheed Adeleke, former Chairman, Iseyin Local Government, as well as other party leaders have all defected to the APC.
In River State, former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Chief Chibudum Nwuche has defected to the APC.
In Kaduna, Prof. Osinbajo who is the Vice President-elect received about 5000 PDP supporters who were defecting from the party. Prominent among them were former member of the House of Representatives, Mrs Ruth Jummai Ango, former Commissioner and Attorney General in the state, Zakari Sogfa and 114 immediate past councilors from 8 local government areas of the zone.
