69 People Burnt Beyond Recognition in Yesterday’s Onitsha Petrol Tanker Accident

It was rivers of tears and scenes of horror yesterday afternoon in Onitsha as a truck filled with Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol lost its brakes as it descended the Onitsha-Enugu expressway and ran into Asaba motor park around upper iweka area of Onitsha city in Anambra state.

As the truck rammed into the motor park, it went up in horrific flames. Eleven vehicles, mostly commuter buses and two motorcycles inside Asaba Park, and the fuel tanker were completely burnt to ashes. Not less than 69 people were charred – burnt beyond recognition, while several other persons, not fewer than 30 were seriously injured. Members of the Red Cross Society who came to render help at the scene took the injured to nearby hospitals while the dead were deposited at various mortuaries.

The Governor, Willie Obiano and the Anambra state Commissioner who rushed down to the accident scene were moved to tears on seeing the number of the accident victims. He promised to do everything possible to see that the survivors are well taken care of medically and otherwise.

Some eye witnesses wished the lorry driver were alive so as to face the court penalty for taking such a foolhardy decision of controlling his vehicle by veering into a motor park, not caring about people’s lives.
